What is NFT (Non-Fungible Token)?
Crypto Glossary Definition
An NFT is a unique piece of data stored on a blockchain. It's a type of cryptographic token that can be bought, sold or transferred. It is often used to verify ownership of an item, such as artwork or any other digital good.
Why NFT (Non-Fungible Token) Matters
Unlike a coin, where every unit is interchangeable, each NFT is unique and traceable to a specific owner on-chain — that's the "non-fungible" part. Beyond digital art and collectibles, the same technology is increasingly used for event tickets, in-game items, and proof of ownership for real-world assets.
NFT (Non-Fungible Token) in Practice
A collector wants to buy a piece of digital art at auction and, unlike buying a fungible token like ETH where every unit is completely interchangeable, is instead bidding on one specific, unique NFT with its own distinct token ID recorded on the blockchain. After winning the auction and paying in ETH, the smart contract transfers ownership of that exact token to her wallet address, an event permanently and publicly visible on-chain, letting anyone verify she is now the recorded owner of that specific item, distinct from any other piece in the same collection. Months later, a concert promoter uses the same underlying technology for a very different purpose: issuing event tickets as NFTs instead of traditional paper or PDF tickets, with each one containing a unique token ID tied to a specific seat, making it straightforward to verify authenticity at the door and preventing the kind of duplicate-ticket fraud that plagues conventional ticketing systems. A game studio does something similar, representing rare in-game items as NFTs so players can genuinely own, trade, or sell them outside the game itself rather than the items existing only inside a company-controlled database that could be altered or wiped at any time. Across all three cases, the defining trait stays constant: each token is singular and traceable, never interchangeable with another unit the way a currency would be.
