Why Node Matters

A node is any computer running the blockchain's software and holding a copy of its transaction history — the more independent nodes spread across the world, the harder the network is to censor, shut down, or attack. Running your own "full node" also lets you verify the blockchain yourself instead of trusting someone else's copy.

A privacy-focused Bitcoin user decides she doesn't want to rely on a third-party wallet provider to tell her whether her funds and transaction history are accurate, so she sets up her own full node on a small home computer, downloading and independently verifying the entire blockchain's transaction history from scratch rather than trusting someone else's copy. Once synced, her node connects to dozens of other nodes worldwide, broadcasting and relaying transactions and new blocks across the peer-to-peer network, and independently checking every rule the protocol requires — correct signatures, no double-spending, valid block structure — rather than simply accepting whatever data other nodes send it. When she later sends a payment from her own wallet software connected to this node, she isn't trusting any external company to confirm the transaction succeeded; her own node can verify it directly against the rules it enforces itself. Multiplied across thousands of independent operators worldwide doing the same thing, this is exactly what gives Bitcoin its censorship resistance: no single government or company can quietly alter the rules or block a transaction, because doing so would require convincing or coercing a majority of these independently operated, geographically dispersed nodes simultaneously, rather than a single centralized authority anyone could pressure or shut down.
