Why Mixing Matters

Coin mixing pools funds from many users together and redistributes them, breaking the direct on-chain link between a sender and receiver's original coins. It's used both for legitimate privacy reasons and, notoriously, to launder stolen or illicit funds — services like Tornado Cash have drawn direct U.S. sanctions specifically over the latter use case.

Mixing in Practice

A privacy-conscious user who received a payment from a client wants to spend those funds without every future transaction being publicly traceable back to that original, identifiable payment on a transparent blockchain like Bitcoin's. He sends the coins into a mixing service, which pools them together with funds from many other unrelated users, then, after a randomized delay and internal shuffling, sends back an equivalent amount, minus a small fee, from that combined pool rather than returning his exact original coins. The on-chain trail connecting his original deposit to his eventual withdrawal is now obscured, since the coins he receives back could plausibly have come from any of the other participants in the pool during that window. This same mechanism, however, has also become a favored tool for laundering funds stolen in exchange hacks or ransomware payments, since it breaks the traceability that investigators rely on to follow stolen funds across the blockchain. That dual-use nature is why the U.S. Treasury sanctioned the Ethereum mixing service Tornado Cash, arguing it had processed a substantial volume of illicit funds despite also serving legitimate privacy-seeking users, a decision that remains legally and ethically contested precisely because the underlying technology itself doesn't distinguish between a privacy-minded freelancer and a hacker laundering stolen crypto.
