To smooth out this variance, he joins a mining pool instead, connecting his hardware to the pool's server and contributing his hash rate toward the pool's combined total. The pool as a whole finds blocks far more frequently since its aggregate hash rate is a meaningful share of the network, and whenever it does, the reward is distributed among all contributing miners proportional to how much computational work each one submitted, typically measured in "shares" of partial solutions. Instead of an unpredictable windfall once every few years, he now receives small, frequent payouts that closely track his hardware's actual output, turning mining from a lottery ticket into something closer to a predictable, if modest, income stream. The tradeoff is that the pool operator takes a small fee for coordinating this and, at scale, concentrates meaningful hash rate under one entity's control, part of why the size of major mining pools is a metric closely watched by those concerned about network decentralization.
