Why Mining Matters

Mining is how Proof-of-Work blockchains like Bitcoin add new blocks and issue new coins, using computing power to solve a cryptographic puzzle. It's also energy-intensive at scale, which is the main reason many newer blockchains chose Proof of Stake instead.

Mining in Practice

A hobbyist sets up a rig of specialized ASIC hardware in his garage, joins a mining pool, and begins contributing computing power toward solving Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work puzzle: repeatedly hashing block data with different nonce values, searching for an output that falls below a specific target difficulty. Because the odds of any single machine finding a valid hash first are astronomically low, joining a pool means his hardware's hash rate is combined with thousands of others, and rewards are split proportionally to each participant's contributed effort whenever the pool as a whole finds a block. Successfully mining a block accomplishes two things simultaneously: it bundles a batch of pending transactions from the mempool into the permanent blockchain record, and it releases newly minted bitcoin plus transaction fees as a reward, split between him and the rest of the pool. Watching his electricity bill climb over the following month, he calculates that at current difficulty and electricity rates, his share of pool rewards barely covers costs — a common outcome as network-wide hash rate and difficulty rise faster than an individual's hardware can keep pace with, especially without access to industrial-scale, low-cost power. This economic reality is exactly why home mining has largely given way to large, professionally operated mining farms in regions with cheap electricity.
