What Is XRP?

XRP is the native cryptocurrency of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), an open-source blockchain created by Ripple Labs in 2012. It is designed primarily to enable fast, low-cost international payments and cross-border money transfers.

Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, XRP does not rely on Proof-of-Work or Proof-of-Stake. Instead, it uses the Ripple Protocol Consensus Algorithm (RPCA) which enables settlement in 3–5 seconds with near-zero fees.

XRP has been at the centre of a high-profile legal battle between Ripple Labs and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) since December 2020. The case has significant implications for how cryptocurrencies are classified in the United States.

XRP Use Cases

🌐

Cross-Border Payments

XRP enables banks and payment providers to settle cross-border transactions in seconds instead of days, at a fraction of the cost.

🌉

Liquidity Bridge

RippleNet uses XRP as a bridge currency to provide on-demand liquidity for payment corridors between different fiat currencies.

Micro-Payments

With fees of a fraction of a cent, XRP is suited for micro-payment use cases where traditional payment rails are too expensive.

🔄

DeFi on XRPL

The XRP Ledger's built-in DEX and AMM features enable decentralised finance applications directly on the protocol.
