Why Signature Matters

A digital signature cryptographically proves that a transaction was authorized by the holder of a specific private key, without revealing the key itself — it's the mechanism that lets a blockchain verify "this person really did approve this transfer" without any central authority vouching for it.

A user wants to send some ETH from their wallet to a friend, so their wallet software takes the transaction details — recipient address, amount, a few other fields — and combines them mathematically with the sender's private key to produce a digital signature, a unique string of data attached to the transaction before it's broadcast to the network. Every node that receives this transaction can then take the signature, the transaction data, and the sender's public key, which is safe to share openly, and run a verification check confirming that whoever created this signature must have possessed the corresponding private key, all without that private key ever being transmitted or exposed anywhere. If even a single detail of the transaction were altered after signing — say, the amount changed to a much larger figure — the signature would no longer verify correctly against the modified data, immediately exposing the tampering attempt. This same mechanism extends well beyond simple transfers: smart contract interactions, off-chain message signing used to prove wallet ownership when logging into a decentralized app, and multi-signature wallets requiring several separate signatures before a transaction executes all rely on this basic cryptographic guarantee that a signature can only be produced by someone holding the matching private key.
