A gaming platform wants to issue thousands of low-value in-game NFTs and process frequent player-to-player trades without paying Ethereum mainnet gas fees for every single action, so the development team builds their marketplace on a sidechain instead — a separate blockchain with its own validators and consensus rules, connected to Ethereum through a two-way bridge. A player buys an item using ETH that's been locked on the Ethereum mainnet and minted as an equivalent representation on the sidechain, trades freely with near-instant confirmation and negligible fees while playing, and later, if they want to cash out, sends the sidechain asset back through the bridge, which burns it on the sidechain and unlocks the original ETH on mainnet. Because the sidechain has its own independent validator set rather than inheriting Ethereum's security directly, its safety depends entirely on how well-designed and well-decentralized that separate validator set actually is, which is a meaningfully different security model than a true Ethereum layer-2 rollup that inherits mainnet security through cryptographic proofs. Several well-known proof-of-stake sidechains have demonstrated both the real scaling benefits and the added trust assumptions that come with running transaction validation somewhere other than the base layer itself.
