Why Zero-Sum Game Matters
Trading between two people is a zero-sum game — one side's gain is exactly the other side's loss — but the crypto market as a whole is not, since total market cap can grow (or shrink) as new capital enters or leaves the system.
Zero-Sum Game in Practice
Consider two traders on opposite sides of a single futures contract: one is long, betting the price will rise, and the other is short, betting it will fall. When the position closes, whatever profit the long trader collects comes directly out of the short trader's account, and vice versa — one side's gain is exactly matched by the other's loss, with no value created or destroyed by the trade itself, which is the textbook definition of a zero-sum game. A newer trader watching this exchange might assume the entire crypto market works the same way, but a more experienced trader corrects them: while any individual trade between two counterparties is zero-sum, the market as a whole is not, since total market capitalization can genuinely grow when new capital flows in from outside the system, or shrink when capital leaves, independent of any single trade's winner or loser. This distinction matters practically because it explains how it's possible for the overwhelming majority of participants in a bull market to show unrealized gains simultaneously, something that would be mathematically impossible in a purely zero-sum system. Derivatives trading, however, especially perpetual futures with funding rates, stays much closer to genuinely zero-sum in practice, which is part of why leveraged trading is considered a much harsher environment for consistently profitable strategies than simply holding an appreciating asset.
