What is Trend Line?

Crypto Glossary Definition

A line that can be drawn (either horizontal or diagonal) in which the value of a given asset or indicator can frequently bump into but not cross. If a trend line is crossed, a larger price movement often follows.

Why Trend Line Matters

A trend line connects a series of price highs or lows to visualize the direction and strength of a trend — where a trend line gets tested and holds (or breaks) is one of the most basic tools in technical analysis.

Trend Line in Practice

A trader studying a coin's four-hour chart draws a diagonal line connecting three consecutive higher lows over the past two weeks, marking what looks like a clean uptrend line the price keeps bouncing off. Each time the price dips down and touches the line, buyers seem to step back in and push it higher again, reinforcing her confidence that the line represents a level other traders are also watching and defending. She starts planning to buy near the trend line on its next touch, with a stop-loss placed just below it in case the pattern finally fails. A few days later, price approaches the line a fourth time, but instead of bouncing, it slices straight through and keeps falling, a break she recognizes as often signaling a larger reversal or accelerated move rather than just a temporary dip. Because she'd set her stop-loss below the line in advance, the break closes her position automatically with a small, contained loss rather than letting her hold on hoping for another bounce that never comes. She later redraws a new trend line using the fresh set of lower highs that follow, treating the tool as something that has to be redrawn and reassessed as price action evolves, not a fixed prediction locked in the moment she first drew it.
