A Bitcoin miner sets up a warehouse full of specialized ASIC hardware, all running continuously to solve the network's proof-of-work puzzle: repeatedly guessing random numbers until one, combined with the block's transaction data, produces a hash below a specific target value, a task that's deliberately, computationally expensive to accomplish but trivial for any other node on the network to verify once found. Every ten minutes or so, one miner somewhere in the world gets lucky first, broadcasts the winning block, and every other node quickly checks the proof and adds the new block to its copy of the chain. The miner's home electricity bill and his neighbor's, who runs a much smaller single-rig setup, both climb noticeably that month, a direct, visible cost of participating in a security model that intentionally makes rewriting blockchain history prohibitively expensive by requiring an attacker to out-compute the network's entire honest hashpower simultaneously. Bitcoin remains the largest and longest continuously running network secured this way, and the sheer scale of global computing power now dedicated to it is exactly what gives holders confidence that its transaction history, going back to the genesis block, is effectively immutable and extraordinarily costly for any single actor to attack or reverse.
