Imagine a friend asks you to send them 0.5 ETH, and instead of carefully copying and pasting a 42-character hexadecimal address, they simply tell you to send it to 'alex.eth.' You type that name into your wallet, which queries the Ethereum Name Service to resolve it to the correct underlying address, and the transaction goes through exactly as it would have with the raw address. The convenience matters more than it first appears: a single mistyped character in a manually copied wallet address can send funds irreversibly to an address nobody controls, with no customer service line to call for a refund. ENS names can also point to more than payment addresses; alex.eth might resolve to a decentralized website, a social media profile, or an avatar image, functioning as a general-purpose identity layer rather than just a payment shortcut. Some users register a short or memorable ENS name early and later resell it for a premium once the name becomes desirable, similar to how domain names are traded on the traditional internet. As with any human-readable naming system, though, users still need to double-check they're sending to the exact intended name, since lookalike names are a known phishing vector.
