A user wants to swap some USDC for a newly launched token that hasn't been listed on any major centralized exchange yet. They connect their wallet directly to a decentralized exchange's website, select the trading pair, and confirm the swap — their wallet signs a transaction that interacts with a liquidity pool smart contract, and moments later the new token appears in their wallet balance. At no point did they create an account, verify their identity, or transfer custody of their funds to any company; the trade settled directly between their wallet and the smart contract, with liquidity provided by other users who deposited both tokens into the pool in exchange for a share of trading fees. If they later want to trade a token that's only a few hours old and hasn't been vetted by any exchange listing team, a DEX will typically list it the moment a liquidity pool is created for it, which is both the appeal and the danger — anyone can create a pool for any token, including scams designed to look legitimate. Because there's no customer support line and no password reset option, a DEX user who sends funds to the wrong address or approves a malicious contract has no recourse, which is the tradeoff for never having to trust a centralized intermediary with custody.
