A technical analyst reviewing a coin's daily chart notices the price has formed a shape resembling a head and shoulders - two smaller peaks of roughly similar height on either side of a taller central peak, with a neckline connecting the lows between them. This pattern is widely associated with trend reversals, so the analyst starts watching closely for a decisive break below the neckline as potential confirmation that the preceding uptrend may be running out of steam. A few days later, price does break below the neckline on rising volume, and the analyst estimates a rough downside target by measuring the distance from the head to the neckline and projecting that same distance below the breakout point - a standard technique for this particular pattern. At the same time, a colleague looking at a completely different asset points out a symmetrical triangle forming, where price is making progressively smaller swings as it gets squeezed between converging trendlines, typically read as a sign of consolidation before an eventual breakout in either direction. Both traders acknowledge chart patterns are pattern recognition rather than hard science - the same shape doesn't guarantee the same outcome every time, and skeptics argue much of it reflects self-fulfilling behavior from traders all watching the same well-known formations rather than any underlying market truth.
