Neither scenario appeared as a meaningful probability in the fund's models, because nothing quite like it had happened at that scale before - or because it had happened rarely enough that the model treated it as negligible. This is what makes an event a black swan: it's not just bad, it's a shock that sits outside the range of outcomes anyone reasonably prepared for, and its consequences ripple through connected parts of the market that looked unrelated beforehand. After the dust settles, analysts inevitably find warning signs in hindsight that seem obvious, which is part of the pattern Nassim Taleb described - black swans look inevitable only in retrospect. The manager's response afterward isn't to build a model that predicts the next black swan specifically, since that's nearly impossible, but to reduce concentrated counterparty exposure so that no single unforeseen failure can be catastrophic again.
