What is Alpha?
Crypto Glossary Definition
Alpha refers to any new information or insight that will allow people to have an advantage when investing.
Why Alpha Matters
In trading, "alpha" specifically means information or insight that hasn't yet been priced in by the broader market — once information is widely known, it stops being alpha, which is why alpha is often described as perishable.
Alpha in Practice
An analyst spends a weekend combing through a DeFi protocol's public code repository and notices a commit hinting at an upcoming partnership integration that hasn't been announced anywhere official yet. Recognizing this as alpha, information the broader market hasn't priced in, they quietly build a position in the protocol's governance token before sharing anything publicly, reasoning that once the partnership is formally announced, demand will likely push the price up as new buyers react to news the analyst already anticipated. A few days later, the project confirms the integration in a blog post, the token rallies, and the analyst closes part of their position for a profit. But by the time the announcement goes out, the information is no longer alpha at all, it's simply public news, and traders who buy afterward are working with what the market has already absorbed into the price. This is why crypto communities treat genuine alpha as perishable and valuable only in the window before it becomes common knowledge, and why some traders pay for private research groups or on-chain analytics tools that claim to surface this kind of information earlier than public channels, even though separating real edge from recycled speculation is often harder than it sounds.
