From that point forward, the device is never paired with a phone via Bluetooth and never plugged into a computer with internet access; instead, when a withdrawal or transfer is needed, the investor builds an unsigned transaction on an online computer, transfers it to the air gapped device using a QR code or a USB drive dedicated solely to that purpose, signs it offline, and then moves the signed transaction back to the online machine for broadcast. Because the device has never touched an unsecured network, malware, remote exploits, and phishing attacks that rely on internet connectivity simply have no path to reach it. The tradeoff becomes obvious the first time the investor needs to move funds quickly during a market swing: the manual, multi-step signing process takes several extra minutes compared to a hot wallet, a deliberate inconvenience accepted in exchange for removing an entire category of remote attack from the equation.
